Kaan Kurtural's Interview on SiriusXM Radio

Dr. Kaan Kurtural joined the faculty at University of California Davis in November 2015. His work focuses on vineyard mechanization and precision viticulture interpreting ecophysiological response of the grapevine to inherent variabilities that may exist in large landscapes. His laboratory is at the historic Oakville Experimental Vineyard in the heart of Napa Valley of California.

The 19th Annual Wine Executive Program at UC Davis, March 24-28, 2019

The 19th Annual Wine Executive Program will take place at UC Davis this March 24-28, 2019. It’s a fantastic collaboration between the Graduate School of Management and the Department of Viticulture and Enology. Both departments are highly regarded in their respective fields, which makes the program so great. It blends both the science of grape growing and wine making with the business aspects needed to be successful in today’s competitive wine market (accounting, marketing, management theory, etc.).

Recap of recent Extension Team activities

This past fall was a busy one for the UC Davis V and E Extension Team.  On November 30, 2018, we traveled to Escondido, CA in San Diego County to meet growers and vintners in Southern California.  To determine the most relevant topics to present, we worked closely with Carmen Gispert, the Viticulture Farm Advisor for Riverside, San Diego, and San Bernardino counties.  We were excited to have such a great turnout, with 101 people attending.  David Block gave an introduction to winery design, focusing on important considerations for quality through cleanability.  Anit

VEN welcomes Assistant Professor of viticulture, Dr. Megan Bartlett

Dr. Megan Bartlett joined the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis as an Assistant Professor in January 2019. Her research focuses on developing models to predict grapevine responses to the climate conditions anticipated for California viticultural regions and identifying the physiology and anatomy traits that are most crucial to target in developing more stress-resistant cultivars.

Tyler Barzee Awarded First BAE Dept. William & Nongkarn Chancellor Graduate Fellow Award

BAE department graduate student and ASABE CA/NV Public Relations Chair Tyler Barzee was awarded the first ever William and Nongkarn Chancellor Graduate Fellowship. Barzee, who is specializing in the fields of Bioenvironmental Engineering and Environmental Biotechnology received this $4,000 award in support of his research. He is interested in bioprocessing technologies that can be applied to reduce the environmental footprint of humanity, especially by harnessing the energy and nutrients embodied in organic wastes.

Assistant Professor Ned Spang named ASI Fellow

Assistant Professor Ned Spang has been invited to be among the select group of “Fellows of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute.”  Dr. Spang was nominated based on his service to ASI and contributions to the types of research, education, and outreach valued at ASI.  Everyone invited to be designated as an ASI Fellow has made distinguished contributions in two or more of these categories.

Dr. Spang will celebrate this honor at the ASI Winter Party on Friday, January 17, 2019 at the Putah Creek Lodge after the ASI's annual External Advisory Board meeting.

Dr. David Mills on Global List of Most-Cited Researchers

Clarivate Analytics has released its annual Highly Cited Researchers list for 2018, and FST's own Professor David Mills is one of 19 faculty from UC Davis on the prestigious list.

All of the UC Davis researchers are listed in a UCD News article by Andy Fell.  He explains, "the list identifies exceptional scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence by publishing multiple papers that rank in the top 1 percent by citations in a particular field and year, over a 10-year period."

VEN 112: Soils and Climate in Viticulture

The Soils and Climate in Viticulture class presents essential principles of soil science and climate for viticulturists and winemakers, to help prepare them to sustainably manage vineyards and soils during their careers. The emphasis is on material that will be useful to these future professionals for optimizing grape production in vineyards, understanding environmental impacts, and developing sustainable practices. This 3-unit class is taught during the winter quarter by Dr. Jean-Jacques Lambert.

Student spotlight: Food Tech Club president Gary Adrian

Gary Adrian is a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in Food Science & Technology. Born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia, he moved to the United States in September 2015 to pursue higher education at UC Davis. From a young age, Gary has always been fascinated by how food connects people and how it serves as an integral component in many festivities. Growing up around diverse, vibrant, and flavorful Indonesian cuisine, he knew that he wants to have a career in a food-related industry that brings people together.

FST PhD graduate Ryan Dowdy managing ISS food systems

Dr. Ryan Dowdy is a former PhD student in Associate Professor Chris Simmons' lab. 

Dowdy was recently hired by NASA as the Food Systems Manager for the International Space Station.  He was interviewed by the Washington Post recently for a "KidsPost" article about what astronauts eat, as part of a larger series of articles about U.S. human spaceflight.  The article is titled "Ever wondered what’s on the astronauts’ menu?"

One of the Department's more popular courses for non-majors and a required course for majors is VEN003, also known as Introduction to Winemaking. The curriculum includes an overview of the history of wine, viticulture, fermentation, winery operations, the physiology of wine consumption, wines produced in California and other major wine-producing regions and finally, the sensory evaluation of wine. Throughout the regular academic year, the course is taught to hundreds of UC Davis students, who want to learn more about wine.

Assistant Professor in Sensory and Consumer Science

The Department of Food Science and Technology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is recruiting an Assistant Professor specializing in sensory and/or consumer science with a PhD in sensory science, consumer science, food science, neurophysiology & behavior, psychology, behavioral nutrition, behavioral economics, marketing or a related field.
