The 100K Genome Project, led by the University of California, Davis, the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, and Agilent Technologies, today announced that it has added 20 newly completed genome sequences of foodborne disease-causing microorganisms to its public database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

On a windy morning in California's Salinas Valley, a tractor pulled a wheeled, metal contraption over rows of budding iceberg lettuce plants. Engineers from Silicon Valley tinkered with the software on a laptop to ensure the machine was eliminating the right leafy buds.

Technologies first developed for wireless communication and space exploration, adapted as irrigation tools, were featured at the annual Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Field Day hosted by the University of California, Davis.
