The position of Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides food processing expertise and manage access for users of the Milk Processing Laboratory at the Robert Mondavi Institute for wine and food science. The Specialist stays apprised of emerging issues and problems and maintains technical competence in the in the designated area(s) of specialization.

The 19th Annual Wine Executive Program will take place at UC Davis this March 24-28, 2019. It’s a fantastic collaboration between the Graduate School of Management and the Department of Viticulture and Enology. Both departments are highly regarded in their respective fields, which makes the program so great. It blends both the science of grape growing and wine making with the business aspects needed to be successful in today’s competitive wine market (accounting, marketing, management theory, etc.).

Recap of recent Extension Team activities

This past fall was a busy one for the UC Davis V and E Extension Team.  On November 30, 2018, we traveled to Escondido, CA in San Diego County to meet growers and vintners in Southern California.  To determine the most relevant topics to present, we worked closely with Carmen Gispert, the Viticulture Farm Advisor for Riverside, San Diego, and San Bernardino counties.  We were excited to have such a great turnout, with 101 people attending.  David Block gave an introduction to winery design, focusing on important considerations for quality through cleanability.  Anita Oberholster spoke about

Dr. Megan Bartlett joined the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis as an Assistant Professor in January 2019. Her research focuses on developing models to predict grapevine responses to the climate conditions anticipated for California viticultural regions and identifying the physiology and anatomy traits that are most crucial to target in developing more stress-resistant cultivars.

Tyler Barzee Awarded First BAE Dept. William & Nongkarn Chancellor Graduate Fellow Award Andrea Thompson January 08, 2019

BAE department graduate student and ASABE CA/NV Public Relations Chair Tyler Barzee was awarded the first ever William and Nongkarn Chancellor Graduate Fellowship. Barzee, who is specializing in the fields of Bioenvironmental Engineering and Environmental Biotechnology received this $4,000 award in support of his research. He is interested in bioprocessing technologies that can be applied to reduce the environmental footprint of humanity, especially by harnessing the energy and nutrients embodied in organic wastes.
