Unit 18 Lecturer for Applied Biological Systems Technology - AY 2019-2020

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of California, Davis, is recruiting for an open Lecturer position to offer instruction in the Applied Biological Systems Technology program.

Assistant Professor in Food Physical Chemistry

The Department of Food Science and Technology in the College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences at UC Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor in Food Physical Chemistry. Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Food Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field. The appointee will be expected to develop a competitively funded research program relevant to food physical chemistry. This is an academic year (9 month) tenure-track Professor position at the assistant rank. The position will include an appointment in the Agricultural Experiment Station carrying the expectation that the appointee conduct mission-oriented research and outreach of relevance to California stakeholders https://caes.ucdavis.edu/research/aes.

FST's Vanessa Lieberman wins UC Davis Safety Star Award

Congratulations go out to Vanessa Lieberman, FST's Department Safety Coordinator in Biosafety and a Lab Assistant in the Harris Lab, who has won the UC Davis Safety Star Award for the 4th quarter of 2019!

Two separate nominators submitted Lieberman's name for the award: Philip Barruel, the Campus Biological Safety Manager, and Dr. Erin DiCaprio, Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Department of Food Science and Technology.

Dr. Paul Singh named Harraways Visiting Professor by the University of Otago

New Zealand's University of Otago named FST Distinguished Professor Emeritus Paul Singh the 2020 Harraways Visiting Professor.

The university's website announced his appointment with a news story, explaining, "Professor Singh is highly recognised in the field of food engineering education, research, development, consultation and technology transfer programs.

"Professor Singh will give workshops and public lectures in Dunedin and Auckland during his August visit, and also attend the Institute of Food Science and Technology 20th World Congress in Auckland."

Dr. Anita Oberholster to lead USDA-NIFA-SCRI Research and Extension Grant to Study Grapevine Red Blotch Virus

A $3 Million Grant was awarded to a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the UC system (Berkeley, Davis, Riverside), ANR, USDA -ARS, as well as Oregon State University and the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center. Research will focus on the ecobiology, impact, and management of Grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV) and its vector(s) in California and Oregon vineyards.

Student Profile: DEVO president Hannah Hanlon

Undergraduate Hannah Hanlon grew up in rural Minnesota, complaining about working for her parents as many children do. When she was ten years old, her parents opened a small family-run winery. Working summers in the vineyard and tasting room, and winters in the winery, she was determined to get out of the country and out of farming.

On July 29, 2019, UC Davis V&E Extension hosted a summer program titled “Fermentation readiness: harvest decisions from the vineyard to the winery.” We spent the day going through our harvest checklists with Lise Asimont, Director of Vineyard Operations, Cakebread Cellars, sharing how she evaluates vineyards, ensures grape quality, and determines potential harvest dates. Our new UC Davis winemaker, Leticia Chacon-Rodriquez, and Patricia Howe, current post-doctoral fellow at UC Davis, covered harvest readiness in the winery and winery lab, respectively.

UC Davis winemaker Leticia Chacon-Rodriguez sent in her recap of the 2019 harvest, her first one since joining the University.

Harvest 2019 has been a privilege and an unforgettable experience as my first harvest surrounded by very talented people, in this extraordinary facility, featuring advanced technology that has been possible due to generous, private donations. According to my colleagues, this harvest has been one of the busiest since the winery’s first harvest in 2010.

Drs. Marco and DiCaprio win USDA grant to study produce fermentation

Professor Charlotte Biltekoff featured in UC Davis podcast about food politics

Professor Charlotte Biltekoff is featured in episode six of UC Davis' new Unfold Podcast. The podcast is in its first season, and is exploring the research done at UC Davis to make agriculture more sustainable, and coming up with potential solutions to feed two billion people by 2050.

Dr. David Mills on Global List of Most-Cited Researchers for 2nd year

Clarivate Analytics has released its annual Highly Cited Researchers list for 2019, and FST's own Professor David Mills is one of 16 faculty from UC Davis on the prestigious list.

All of the UC Davis researchers are listed in a UCD News article by Andy Fell. He explains, "the list identifies exceptional scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence by publishing multiple papers that rank in the top 1 percent by citations in a particular field and year, over a 10-year period."
