Awards and Honors

Kudos to FST Specialist in Cooperative Extension and Research Director of the UC Davis Olive Center, Selina Wang, who has been awarded the 2021 Faculty Stewardship Award by the UC Davis Foundation.  

Two members of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) Distributed Shared Services Center (DiSSC) have received certifications from the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) - human resources managers Andrea Aguilar (from our BFTV Cluster) and Leslie Jones.

Congratulations to Dr. Anita Oberholster, Cooperative Extension Specialist in Enology, in the Department of Viticulture & Enology at UC Davis! She has been selected by the UC Davis Academic Federation Executive Council as the recipient of the 2021 Academic Federation Distinguished Service Award. As California’s only extension enologist, Anita supports more than 4,500 wineries.

Congratulations to Leslie Herzog, hardworking Food Science and Technology Leadership Board member for over a decade, as well as the VP of Operations and Research Services at The Understanding & Insight Group, LLC.  He is the 2021 recipient of the Institute of Food Technologists' Calvert L. Willey Distinguished Service Award. 

The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences 45th Annual Field Day, held March 6th, featured 11 virtual contests, allowing 1,104 Future Farmers of America and 4H students to compete in a very complex event which involved a lot of extra work by all Advisors and Coordinators to make changes, create online content, shoot and edit videos, create new rubrics and more.

The UC Davis College Bowl team went undefeated in this year’s Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) Pacific Northwest Regional Competition, held virtually by Washington State University and University of Idaho, placing first among tough competition. The team consisted of Katie Uhl (graduate student and team captain), Claire Lefebre (undergraduate student), Megha Ramesh (undergraduate student), Maria Shaposhnikov (undergraduate student), Amanda Sinrod (graduate student), and Angela Weber (undergraduate student).

Congratulations to FST’s Dr. Maria Marco and her co-authors on making the March 2021 cover of Nature Reviews Gastroenterology and Hepatology with their article, “The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) consensus statement on fermented foods”.   

Congratulations to Alyson Mitchell, who has been elected to a three-year term as a Councilor for the Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. Councilors represent their constituents as part of the governing body of the American Chemical Society. She was also elected to serve on the ACS Committee on Public Relations and Communications (CPRC).

Congratulations to Dr. Selina Wang, the winner of the Olive Wellness Institute's inaugural Achievement Award!  Dr. Wang is a Cooperative Extension Specialist in our FST Department, and Research Director of the Olive Center at UC Davis.  The Olive Wellness Institute Achievement Award is awarded to someone who has contributed most to olive science or olive related research in the past 5–10 years.
