Mariah Mier wins IFT's IFTPS - Irving Pflug Memorial Scholarship for 2020

David Block named as fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers 

Professor David Block, chair of the Department of Viticulture and Enology, has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The honor affirms the high esteem with which his colleagues and peers view his distinctive professional achievements and accomplishments.

Iron Brew Undergrad Winners Featured on UC Davis News/Dateline

Congratulations to Iron Brew Competition winners (and FST Brewing Science undergrads) Baoluo Gao, Charlie Thudium, Andres Rugama, and Eitan Newfield, who along with Anheuser-Busch Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences Dr. Glen Fox, made the UC Davis main News page and are featured in Dateline UC Davis.  The beer from the winning team is on sale now at supporting brewing partner Sudwerk, and in stores next week after August 3rd (details in article).

FST Team takes 2nd place in 30th Annual IFTSA & Mars Product Development Competition

Congratulations to UC Davis Food Science and Technology's Faba Friends Product Development Team for winning second place in the 30th Annual IFTSA & Mars Product Development Competition!   The competition was part of SHIFT20 (IFT’s virtual annual expo, held June 22-23rd).  The team consisted of recent graduates Kat Fernandez (team captain), Josh Bjurman, Jacqueline Yee, and Amanda Ting, and 4th year undergraduates Mirai Miura, Andy Leung, Myhan Nguyen, and Thomas Nguyen. 

Kat Fernandez, finalist for the IFTSA Excellence in Leadership Award

Congratulations to recent 2020 Food Science & Technology graduate, Kat Fernandez, for being selected as one of three finalists for the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association's (IFTSA) Excellence in Leadership Award for the Undergraduate Category.  The award recognizes those who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in their execution of student activities that furthers the mission of IFT.  Great achievement, Kat!

James H. Meyer Distinguished Achievement Award: Linda J. Harris

Congratulations to Linda J. Harris, FST Chair and Cooperative Extension Specialist in Microbial Food Safety, for being awarded the UC Davis Academic Federation’s highest honor, the James H. Meyer Distinguished Achievement Award, named after the late chancellor.  From the announcement: "She has developed an internationally recognized outreach program and is one of the most successful and important food safety microbiologists in the world today.

FST's Vanessa Lieberman wins UC Davis Safety Star Award

Congratulations go out to Vanessa Lieberman, FST's Department Safety Coordinator in Biosafety and a Lab Assistant in the Harris Lab, who has won the UC Davis Safety Star Award for the 4th quarter of 2019!

Two separate nominators submitted Lieberman's name for the award: Philip Barruel, the Campus Biological Safety Manager, and Dr. Erin DiCaprio, Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Department of Food Science and Technology.

Dr. Paul Singh named Harraways Visiting Professor by the University of Otago

New Zealand's University of Otago named FST Distinguished Professor Emeritus Paul Singh the 2020 Harraways Visiting Professor.

The university's website announced his appointment with a news story, explaining, "Professor Singh is highly recognised in the field of food engineering education, research, development, consultation and technology transfer programs.

"Professor Singh will give workshops and public lectures in Dunedin and Auckland during his August visit, and also attend the Institute of Food Science and Technology 20th World Congress in Auckland."

Dr. David Mills on Global List of Most-Cited Researchers for 2nd year

Clarivate Analytics has released its annual Highly Cited Researchers list for 2019, and FST's own Professor David Mills is one of 16 faculty from UC Davis on the prestigious list.

All of the UC Davis researchers are listed in a UCD News article by Andy Fell.  He explains, "the list identifies exceptional scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence by publishing multiple papers that rank in the top 1 percent by citations in a particular field and year, over a 10-year period."
