New Center Expands Food Safety Training and Support for Growers

Small and diverse farms are a vital part of California’s food system, but navigating food safety regulations can be challenging, especially for those with limited access to training and resources. To bridge this gap, UC Davis is leading an effort to establish the California Center for Food Safety, a new hub offering growers the education and support they need to meet food safety standards.

Food Tech Club News Fall 2024

The Food Tech Club (FTC) is a student chapter of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Our goal is to help students find connections and passion in food research, industry, and beyond! In fall quarter, we had many great opportunities to share knowledge with each other, and to bond as a community. In November, we hosted a scallion pancake food demo, aimed to teach people how to cook unique cuisines!  

Welcome to Assistant Professor Andrew Gravelle

Please welcome Food Science and Technology's newest faculty member, Assistant Professor Andrew Gravelle.  Andrew comes to us from the University of Guelph, where he earned his Ph.D. in Food Science this year.  His M.S. and B.S. degrees were in Biophysics, also at the University of Guelph, after which he was a Research Associate in Food Science for seven years, 2011-2017, just prior to his doctoral degree studies from 2018-2021.   

Margaret Lawson creates Scholarship & Fellowship for FST Undergrad and Graduate Students

In recognition of the value of her UC Davis Food Science degrees, Alumna Margaret Lawson ’77, MS ’79, has made an estate commitment to create the Margaret A. Lawson Scholarship for undergraduate students in food science, and the Margaret A. Lawson Fellowship to support graduate students in food science. These funds will be endowed in perpetuity to support and encourage generations of UC Davis students seeking food science degrees.
