Paper by Ph.D. student Katie Uhl and Professor Mitchell chosen for Oct. 2022 cover of ACS Food Science & Technology

FST Ph.D. student Katherine (Katie) Uhl and her research advisor, Professor Alyson Mitchell, have published the first paper characterizing the aroma profile of blue elderflowers.  Their paper, “Headspace Volatile Organic and Phenolic Compounds in Elderflowers and Elderflower Teas of Blue Elderberry (Sambucus nigra ssp. cerulea)” was selected as the cover image for October 2022 (above) for the journal ACS Food Science & Technology. 

Anita Oberholster, Elizabeth Tomasino and Tom Collins Nominated for Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards 2022 Innovator(s) of the Year

Anita Oberholster (Vice-Chair and Cooperative Extension Specialist in Enology in the Department of Viticulture & Enology at UC Davis), Elizabeth Tomasino (Associate Professor of Enology in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Oregon State University), and Tom Collins (Assistant Professor in Viticulture and Enology at Washington State University) have been nominated for the Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards 2022 Innovator(s) of the Year for their work toward understanding and managing the effects of wildfire smoke in grapes and wine!

Congratulations to all students who received scholarships and awards this year. Scholarship winners were celebrated on Friday, June 10, 2022, during the Department of Viticulture and Enology graduation ceremony.  The Department is grateful to the generous donors who make these opportunities possible. 

The Department of Viticulture and Enology awarded the following students with department citations at the end of the 2021-22 academic year.

Awards and Honors

David Block, Chair & Professor, Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis, and Konrad Miller, Adjunct Professor, Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis, have won a Special Mention from the OIV - International Organisation of Vine and Wine in their 2022 book awards for their textbook: Unit Operations in Winery, Brewery, and Distillery Design. A ceremony will take place in France on September 30th.
