Iron Brew Undergrad Winners Featured on UC Davis News/Dateline

Congratulations to Iron Brew Competition winners (and FST Brewing Science undergrads) Baoluo Gao, Charlie Thudium, Andres Rugama, and Eitan Newfield, who along with Anheuser-Busch Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences Dr. Glen Fox, made the UC Davis main News page and are featured in Dateline UC Davis.  The beer from the winning team is on sale now at supporting brewing partner Sudwerk, and in stores next week after August 3rd (details in article).

FST Team takes 2nd place in 30th Annual IFTSA & Mars Product Development Competition

Congratulations to UC Davis Food Science and Technology's Faba Friends Product Development Team for winning second place in the 30th Annual IFTSA & Mars Product Development Competition!   The competition was part of SHIFT20 (IFT’s virtual annual expo, held June 22-23rd).  The team consisted of recent graduates Kat Fernandez (team captain), Josh Bjurman, Jacqueline Yee, and Amanda Ting, and 4th year undergraduates Mirai Miura, Andy Leung, Myhan Nguyen, and Thomas Nguyen. 

The Phaff Yeast Culture Collection on "After Dark" Series

The Phaff Yeast Culture Collection will be part of the weekly Thursday evening “After Dark” series at the Exploratorium this Thursday March 12, from 6:00 to 10:00 PM. Visitors can learn how we use yeast to make many different fermented foods and beverages, view microbes from some foods and beverages under the microscope, see and smell different species of yeast, and learn about the current research going on at the Phaff Yeast Culture Collection.

The Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis is celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2020.  To celebrate this milestone, we are planning an all-class alumni get-together on April 24, 2020.

Winegrape vineyards can be converted for machine pruning without replanting

Wine grape growers in the San Joaquin Valley who want to switch from hand pruning to mechanical pruning won't have to replant their vineyards to accommodate machinery, according to a new study published in HortTechnology by University of California Cooperative Extension researchers. Instead, growers can retrain the vines to make the transition, without losing fruit yield or quality.

Biodiversity Museum Day

Looking for a family-friendly, free activity for President’s Day weekend? On Saturday February 16, 2019 from 9AM to 1PM you can learn about the importance of microbes in research, biotechnology, and food and beverages, and about the proud history of two of the world’s prominent microbe collections. UC Davis Biodiversity Museum Day features twelve biological collections, including the Phaff Yeast Culture Collection in the Food Science & Technology department, and the Viticulture & Enology Culture Collection.

UC Davis FST faculty to present at Natural Products Expo West

Natural Products Expo West is the world's largest natural, organic and healthy products event and hosts more than 80,000 attendees including those shaping the future of healthy products.  The 2018 trade show is held at the Anaheim Convention Center from March 7-11, 2018.
