FST Chair Dr. Linda Harris named Fellow of IAFP

September 10, 2019

Department Chair Dr. Linda Harris was awarded Fellow at the Annual International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) annual meeting in Louisville KY on July 21, 2019.  Dr. Harris served as President of IAFP from 2017-2018.

Also notable at the same meeting: Professor Michelle Danyluk (Ph.D. UC Davis FST 2006 in the Harris Lab) was appointed incoming Secretary to the Executive Board of IAFP, and as a result, she is slated to serve as President of the association in 2022-2023.

Congratulations to VEN scholarship winners

Congratulations to all of our students who won scholarships this year!  Scholarship winners were celebrated on June 4 at a barbecue overlooking the Good Life Garden at UC Davis.  Many donors were present at the celebration and mingled with the students.  The Department is grateful to our generous donors who make these opportunities possible. 

Professor Sue Ebeler's ASEV Honorary Research Lecture

Professor Sue Ebeler recently gave the ASEV Honorary Research Lecture at the ASEV annual meeting in June.  Her lecture, titled "Perspectives on Grape and Wine Flavor: Past, Present, and Future" is summarized in the abstract below:

UCD team wins 2nd place in Ocean Spray Student Product Development Competition

Congratulations to the UC Davis FST team who received second place in the 2019 Ocean Spray Product Development competition!

The team was led by Melvinna Tania, and includes Olga Lawrence, Mary-Ann Chen, Tonya Xie, and Bryan Magaline.  They created their product, Cranwich: bite-sized cookies, naturally flavored and dyed pink with cranberry concentrate.  The cookies sandwich a filling made from real whole cranberries, chia seeds, and agave nectar. 

UC Davis College Bowl team update

The UC Davis College Bowl team recently traveled to Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City, Utah, to compete in the 2019  IFTSA Pacific Northwest Area College Bowl competition. The team consisted of Katie Uhl (graduate student and team captain), Kay Senn (graduate student), Madison Dosh (undergraduate student), and Andres Gonzalez (undergraduate student). The event brought together teams from UC Davis, Oregon State University, Utah State University, Washington State University/University of Idaho, and the hosting school, Brigham Young University.

Dr. Ned Spang wins NACADA Region 9 Award

UC Davis was recognized with seven of twelve regional honors by NACADA, the global community for academic advising at the NACADA Region 9 Awards, and FST's own Assistant Professor Ned Spang was one of the honorees.   NACADA's website states, "Region 9 is proud to support student success by providing opportunities for recognition and professional development opportunities for students, academic advisors and administration."
