FST’s Erin DiCaprio and Linda J. Harris held the Better Process Control School (BPCS) February 14-17th, 2023 for a class of 75 industry (including small business) and regulatory personnel. Linda was the course coordinator from 2017 to 2022 (taking over from Diane Barrett in 2017); Erin is the current course coordinator.
In light of the recent storms we have had, and with more storms on the way, Food Science and Technology Cooperative Extension faculty Erin DiCaprio and Linda J. Harris would like to remind our colleagues, including those in the food industry (as well as the public at large) that we have information resources for food safety during emergencies highlighted on our UC Food Safety webpage.
Just in time for the holidays – a food safety reminder for all home cooks. FST’s Linda J. Harris, in a VeryWellHealth article by Stephanie Brown, “Spice Containers Are Probably the Dirtiest Items in Your Kitchen” recommends making a habit of washing your hands, moving potentially-contaminated items directly to the dishwasher or sink, and cleaning and sanitizing the counters as you cook.
FST's Dr. Erin DiCaprio, Assistant Cooperative Extension Specialist in Community Food Safety, has been awarded a National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) grant to assist small-scale fruit and vegetable processors to be in compliance with food safety regulations such as the Food Safety Modernization Act. The grant will fund new low-to-no-cost online education and in-person workshops which will be offered in both English and Spanish by the team of collaborators, which also includes Cal-Poly Pomona, Purdue, and the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.
