Linda J. Harris was awarded the William C. Frazier Memorial Lectureship in Food Microbiology by the Food Research Institute in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at University of Wisconsin-Madison. The award was presented at the FRI's 2023 Spring Meeting on May 16, 2023 in Madison, Wisconsin.

FST students win Iron Brew 2023

Congratulations to the 2023 Iron Brew winners! Each year, the students in the practical malting and brewing course at UC Davis formulate a recipe and compete for the Iron Brew title. The winning team includes Food Science and Technology students Sarah Jane Suriano, Asuka Okamoto, Yoon Jung Choi and Zachary Alan Carling. Their English porter was scaled up with the help of Sudwerk Brewing Company and will be released at the Gunrock Pub on campus June 8, and at Sudwerk on June 9.

Katie Calhoun was recently elected to the Executive Leadership Board (ELB) of the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis. Katie (pronounced “Kah-tee”), who has over 30 years of PR expertise, is president of Calhoun & Company Communications and has devoted her entire career to the wine and spirits industry.

UC Davis Team is a U.S. Department of Energy AlgaePrize Champion

A UC Davis team composed of master’s degree students Mia Gaiero and Truc Pham, together with their mentors, Drs. Juliana de Moura Bell and Daniela Barile, participated in the in the U.S. Department of Energy AlgaePrize, which was hosted at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO on April 14–16, 2023.

NCIFT 1st place win in student poster competition for undergrad Yongju Cho

FST 2nd year undergraduate student Yongju Cho (Selina Wang lab) won first place for the student poster competition hosted by the Northern California section of the Institute of Food Technologists, or NCIFT! Her poster title was “A case study using California olive pomace for potential valorization strategy of olive oil industry by-products by the application in avocado oil-based cosmetics”. The honor was given April 25th at their annual Suppliers' Night event, which includes an educational symposium and a suppliers' expo.

Zhuosheng Liu takes first place in NCIFT student poster competition

Bamforth is 2023 Craft Beer Pioneer

Dr. Charlie Bamforth, FST Distinguished Professor Emeritus, was honored as the 2023 Craft Beer Pioneer at the Third Annual Brewers Cup of California. The Pioneer Award was created to "recognize an individual who has propelled the craft beer industry over the years and helped shape it into what it is today. These individuals are synonymous with California’s beer scene, and it is a privilege to be able to celebrate their contributions with this prestigious award."
