The UC Davis Viticulture and Enology Extension team had a busy fall quarter. We presented three more Office Hours with Dave and Anita (Episodes 12, 13, and 14) and an On the Road program focused on the Paso Robles (San Luis Obispo) area. Office Hours topics and guests were as follows:
Episode 12: September 15, Anita Oberholster, Smoke Exposure Q and A
Episode 13: November 17, Kaan Kurtural and Daniele Zaccaria, New methods of assessing grapevine evapotranspiration demands and what it means to you
Episode 14: December 15, Andrew Walker and Kaan Kurtural, Fire Damage in the Vineyard: assessment, recuperation, and fruiting in subsequent seasons
We spent much of September and October providing the latest information about smoke exposure for our stakeholders, on our webpage dedicated to wildfire and smoke exposure resources. This included making an instructional “how to” video of the WCSETF Small Scale Fermentation protocol. The video is posted on YouTube. We also provided a FAQ page and information on laboratories providing testing for smoke exposure compounds. In addition, UC Davis and the CDFA collaborated to temporarily set up commercial analysis of volatile phenols in wine and grape samples, respectively, to help alleviate the backlog of samples to be tested.
We are in the process of planning future programs. In 2021, we plan to complete four On the Road programs in the following counties or areas: Kern, Alameda /Contra Costa, Shasta/Tehama, and the 3Ms (Merced, Madera, and Mariposa counties). In addition, we are planning the following (usually On Campus) virtual programs:
February 9 and 10, 2021: Healthy Vineyard Soils, to view the agenda and for registration information: https://wineserver.ucdavis.edu/events/healthy-vineyard-soils
March 4, 2021: Wine Regulations (TTB, ABC, FSMA, and OSHA), agenda and registration available soon
April 7 and 8, 2021: Recent Advances in Viticulture and Enology, agenda and registration available soon
May 13, 2021: An Improved Approach to Grapevine Canopy Management
We will keep you informed as to the status (in-person or virtual) of future events as more information becomes available. If you are not already receiving extension programming information and would like to be added to the list, please contact Karen Block or Caroline Firman.
