This summer, the UC Davis Department of Viticulture & Enology (V&E) was honored with a nomination for the Impact Award in the Bridge Category by the SommCon team. This recognition celebrates academic institutions whose hospitality programs demonstrate excellence in education, strong industry collaboration, and a commitment to preparing future leaders in service. Although we did not receive the award, we are proud to have been considered among such distinguished institutions.

The Board of Trustees for the American Wine Society Educational Foundation (AWSEF) selected two students working in the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology (V&E) faculty labs as scholarship recipients. These exceptional graduate students are pioneering research that will redefine the future of viticulture, enology, and sustainable wine production across North America.

  • Brandt Bastow, Ph.D. candidate, Agricultural & Environmental Chemistry, University of California, Davis

    • Scholarship in Memory of Thomas King (Anonymous Donor): Developing rapid, affordable methods to detect smoke taint using fluorescence spectroscopy and chemometric modeling, empowering growers with timely harvest decisions during wildfire events.

  • Arpa Boghozian, Ph.D. candidate, Horticulture & Agronomy, University of California, Davis

    • AWS Chapter of Cleveland, Ohio Scholarship: Investigating the impact of Grapevine Red Blotch Virus on fruit development to support new enzyme-based vineyard practices that preserve quality and reduce grower losses.


Emeritus Professor Andrew Waterhouse has joined the Board of Trustees for SCI®: Where Science Meets Business, a global network of innovators applying science to tackle today’s biggest challenges—from climate and the environment to health and wellness.


Lastly, we would like to recognize and applaud this year's faculty promotions. Congratulations to "now" Associate Professor Megan Bartlett, Associate Professor Mason Earles, Professor Ben Montpetit, and Distinguished Professor David Block!
