Food Science and Technology's Cooperative Extension would like to wish you all a happy and safe World Food Safety Day today, June 7th. World Food Safety Day is an initiative that was started by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The motto for this year is "Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected".
From the WHO World Food Safety Day page: "Food safety incidents are situations where there is a potential or confirmed health risk associated with food consumption. A food incident can happen, for example, due to accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud or natural events. While being ready to manage food safety incidents requires dedicated efforts from policymakers, food safety authorities, farmers and food business operators, consumers also can play an active role."
You can find some good reminders on agency food safety pages like FDA World Food Safety Day and USDA Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected, and UC Food Safety (an online resource developed and maintained by FST Professors of Cooperative Extension Drs. Linda J. Harris and Erin Dicaprio) has a Kitchen Food Safety page where you can review the basics of kitchen food safety (Clean - Separate - Cook - Chill), tips for packing a safe lunch, for eating outdoors, and information on kitchen tools and appliances. Much more information is there for you at our consumer portal as well as resources for processors and distributors and growers.
Wishing you a great (happy, safe) summer!
