Degree/Focus/interest areas:
One unique feature about the viticulture and enology program at UC Davis is that undergraduate students must complete courses in both disciplines. That being said, I have found that even though I originally thought that I would prefer viticulture, I have thoroughly enjoyed the courses with a focus in enology. Going forward, I would like to pursue positions that have roles in both disciplines.

What brought you to UC Davis?
I was drawn to the major initially because of its intersection of science, plants, and a long-lasting history in many parts of the world. In applying to schools, UC Davis was one of my top choices because of the vast research opportunities available to students, and I was lucky enough to start out in the program as a freshman.
What do you enjoy the most about studying in this program?
The strong connections amongst students and faculty are unique to the program. The program is made up of undergraduate and graduate students from all walks of life. This makes learning so much more fun since everyone has individual experiences and paths that influence how they perceive questions in class and their responses are shaped by these experiences. Furthermore, because undergraduate and graduate students take a lot of the same classes, there is a great community aspect to the program that makes it very unique.
Have you interned at a winery/vineyard management company? If so, tell us about your experience.
In the summer of 2020, I did a sparkling harvest at Domaine Chandon. Over the course of the very quick harvest, I learned a lot about production. From fruit receival to the cellar, I was exposed to the daily activities during harvest, but also to questions of smoke impact on grape quality since during that harvest the fires of Napa Valley affected so many growers and producers.
What are your plans after you graduate?
I hope to pursue research after I graduate either in the academic field or in the industry. By gaining more experience, I would like to someday contribute to the industry with innovative ideas as we continue to combat environmental hurdles.
How has the pandemic affected you as a student?
As with most undergraduate students, the pandemic changed the course of how I envisioned my college years. Nonetheless, students in the program have found ways to build a community either through zoom events or even park meet-ups after classes. Even though our expected classroom and social experiences were taken away, students and faculty were really innovative in creating connections that will last a lifetime as we move forward.
What is one unique thing about you?
I can speak more than one language and always try to learn more and build my skills whenever I have the opportunity.
