Nine UC Davis biological collections including the Phaff Yeast Culture Collection are all having open houses the same day, Saturday, Feb 8, 2025! More information at the UC Davis Biodiversity Museum day event website. The yeast collection exhibits will be open 10:00 am - 2:00 pm in the Robert Mondavi Brewery, Winery and Food Pilot Facility. This annual FREE public event is a great opportunity to talk to scientists, learn about discoveries being made at UC Davis, and see some great facilities that are usually not open to visitors.

Visitors can tour the teaching brewery and winery, taste Vegemite and kombucha, see many different species of yeast under the microscope, laugh at some really funny yeast jokes, and learn about discoveries that are being made at UC Davis using yeasts in the Phaff Yeast Culture Collection. Newly discovered fats and oils made by yeasts will be on display. Event schedule:

  • Continually: Tours of the UC Davis Teaching and Research Winery, the first LEAD Platinum Winery
  • 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, Noon, 12:30, 1:00 and 1:30: Tours of the UC Davis Teaching and Research Brewery
  • 11:45, Food Science Classroom, 1106 BWF building: Yeast collection curator Dr. Kyria Boundy-Mills will give a brief talk, “How Scientists Name New Yeast Species”.

The yeast exhibits will be in the Food Science classroom and the Winery classroom in the BWF building, which is one of the orange Robert Mondavi Institute buildings. Parking is available in the surface lots on Hilgard Ave. Look for signs pointing the way.

UC Davis collections of plants, birds, mammals, insects and nematodes at UC Davis work together to put on this annual event. At other collections, you can handle dinosaur fossils, see birds of prey up close, learn what different carnivorous plants eat, see insects that look like sticks or leaves, and so much more! Note that different collections are open different hours, so please plan ahead. More information is available on the event website: https://biodiversitymuseumday.ucdavis.edu

Thank you to Novonesis and White Labs for their support of the yeast exhibit.
