Professor Emeritus David Smart passed away on April 29, 2020, after a long illness. Born in San Francisco, David spent most of his youth outside of Murphys, CA. After graduating from Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp, Dave completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at UC Davis. After postgraduate work in Utah and Spain, Dave joined the Department of Viticulture and Enology in 2000 as an Assistant Professor, focusing his research on a number of topics including: root biology, spatial mapping of vineyard variability, greenhouse gas emissions, grapevine ecophysiology, carbon sequestration in agricultural soils, and the use of GIS for water management in orchards. He taught VEN 101C and a couple of graduate level classes, one of which involved traveling with students across the state to give them insights into modern viticulture and vineyard establishment. Dave had several former students and collaborators all over the United States and around the world, many of whom attended an on-campus extension program in honor of his career on Dec 3, 2019. He also enjoyed many outdoor activities. These activities included: running and biking in Davis; skiing in the Sierras, Utah, the Alps, and the Pyrenees; and hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in California and the Salkantay in Peru. David is survived by his wife, Maria, and two daughters.
