"Linear-Move Irrigation System: Design and Scheduling"
Abstract: Linear move (or lateral move) systems are continuous-move irrigation systems. Water is usually applied to a crop above the canopy. Similar to side-roll systems, the machine moves linearly up and down a field. Depending on the design and size of the field, the pump and power source are located either at one end or in the middle on a mobile cart. A flexible hose or open channel is used to supply water from a pipeline or channel. Major components of these systems are a series of water delivery spans supported by wheeled towers. The tower includes a gearbox, drive wheels and an electric or hydraulic drive motor. Sprinklers are evenly spaced and attached to the water delivery pipe. The pump delivers a flow rate within a fixed range and the machine speed determines the depth of water that is applied. A series of micro switches, alignment levers and control equipment are used for system alignment. In this lecture, we will first review the general specifications of linear move systems. We will then discuss the parameters which need to be considered in designing a linear move system and review the associated equations. Upon completion of this section, we will design a linear move system for an example crop grown in a specified soil and under specified evapotranspiration demand and provide the associated irrigation scheduling.
