"The Food-Water-Energy Nexus: Information, analytics and Innovation"

Food, water, and energy resource systems are inextricably linked an interrelationship known as the food-water-energy nexus. While the complexity of this relationship often generates difficult tradeoffs where the enhancement of one sector comes at the expense of another, many opportunities exist to harmonize these systems. However, any effort to achieve such balanced optimization requires a clear and consistent characterization of the nexus. Dr. Spangs presentation will provide an overview of his research in this area, from the global to the local scale, from infrastructure systems to the consumer, and from the city to the farm. He will also discuss how advancements in IT technologies and the availability of higher-resolution data in each of these sectors generate new opportunities for understanding and optimizing the food-water-energy nexus.
