Reminder: Smoke and Tobacco Free Policy In Effect Beginning January 1, 2014

Smoke free sign

Dear UC Davis Community,

This is a reminder that that the new systemwide Smoke and Tobacco Free policy goes into effect at UC Davis on January 1, 2014. This means that smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will no longer be allowed on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including, parking lots, roadways and residential spaces.

This policy reflects the university's commitment to the health of our campus community and to the safety and cleanliness of the environment. The dangers associated with tobacco use and secondhand smoke are well known, and we trust that this new policy will prove to be beneficial to smokers and non-smokers alike.

We hope this policy will provide positive motivation for tobacco users to quit. We also acknowledge that some people will experience the challenges associated with giving up tobacco. Numerous resources are being provided to help, including a free two-week supply of nicotine replacement therapy, smoking cessation classes and 24/7 telephone counselling. You can find details at breathefree.ucdavis.edu

Enforcement will initially be educational. Those found using nicotine products in violation of the policy will be offered information about the policy and about smoking cessation resources. After an initial phase-in period, additional enforcement measures will be considered if necessary.

Our students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors deserve the healthiest possible place to live, work and learn. I appreciate your support in making health, well-being and a cleaner environment top priorities on our campus.

Sincerely,

John Meyer
Vice Chancellor, Administrative and Resource Management
