Awards and Honors

David Block, Chair & Professor, Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis, and Konrad Miller, Adjunct Professor, Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis, have won a Special Mention from the OIV - International Organisation of Vine and Wine in their 2022 book awards for their textbook: Unit Operations in Winery, Brewery, and Distillery Design. A ceremony will take place in France on September 30th.

$4 Million Endowment Bolsters UC Davis Viticulture and Enology

The University of California, Davis, Department of Viticulture and Enology has received a $4 million endowment that will provide support in perpetuity for the kind of research and education that has made the department world renowned in its field.

The endowment, given anonymously, will fund unique projects that use and further develop analytical tools, advanced technologies and techniques, and equipment.

Andy Waterhouse Retires in June after 31 Years with the Department of Viticulture & Enology

Thank you to Professor Andrew Waterhouse for all he has done for the department and the university.  He will be retiring at the end of June 2022.  He has served as department chair, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, and, most recently, Director of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. He has been a great mentor to many students and is always ready with an industry connection when a student is looking for that first internship.

The Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis is excited to announce that Luis Diaz-Garcia will be joining the department as a new faculty member and grape breeder, starting July 1, 2022! The people: Research in the Montpetit lab is driven by a dedicated group of scientists at the undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and staff levels. Current members of the lab arrived here at UC Davis from other parts of California, the US, Canada, and Japan.

Update from the UC Davis Department of Viticulture & Enology Extension Team

We were very excited that on Nov 10, we were able to host the 2021 Winter Grape Day at the UC Davis Conference Center, our first On Campus, in-person event since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Cooperative Extension Specialist, Kaan Kurtural, gathered 14 speakers presenting on topics ranging from the effects of wildfire smoke on grapevines, grapes, and wine to soil health, irrigation management, nitrogen in table grapes, and the effects of cover crops on grapevine physiology.
