Staff Research Associate 4

The Department of Food Science and Technology  and The UC Laboratory for Research in Food Preservation is searching for a Staff Research Associate 4. This position is located in Dublin, CA.

Under general direction, establish processes for low-acid and acidified, shelf stable products; evaluate processing equipment and design and implement appropriate testing regimes to evaluate the public health safety aspects of the products and equipment. Develop new and novel testing regimens and apply appropriate surrogate microorganisms and novel equipment to evaluate the processing equipment. Develop operating documents for the equipment with appropriate critical factors, which are easily understood and implemented by others. Evaluate process deviations and make appropriate remedial recommendations for the disposition of the product. Provide technical support to the State inspectors and provide appropriate training. This position works directly with the State of California Department of Public Health Food and Drug Branch to assure the safe production of low-acid and acidified foods.

POSITION INFORMATION

Salary Range: $66,527.52-$107,058.12 (Salary commensurate with experience).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.S. Degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience evaluating and designing tests associated with thermal and non-thermal processing and acidification requirements
  • Experience designing, study and interpretation of data studies, and heat transfer experiments, and communicating results the technical analysis of the processing systems and/or deviations.
  • Knowledge of microbial growth and thermal and non-thermal processing or acidification and processing requirements for foods in hermetically sealed containers.
  • Skills to develop and maintain operating documents allowing State inspectors to regulate the operations of new processing and packaging systems.
