Linda J. Harris answers five questions in ANR interivew

Why Food Science Departments Need Leadership Boards

Longtime Food Science and Technology Leadership Board members Jacqueline Beckley and Leslie Herzog authored an article for IFT Digital Exclusives, February 7th, 2022: "Why Food Science Departments Need Leadership Boards".  In the article, they start with the history of food science leadership boards, ways in which they offer support to the departments, board member selection, charters, and opportunties for board members.  The pair draw on their considerable experience over the past three decades at four different university food science departments.  

Linda J. Harris is new AAAS Fellow

The Department of Food Science and Technology is pleased to announce that Linda J. Harris, Professor of Cooperative Extension was elected to the rank American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow by the Council of AAAS. 

California pushes composting to lower food waste emissions

DAVIS, Calif. (AP) — Banana peels, chicken bones and leftover veggies won’t have a place in California trashcans under the nation’s largest mandatory residential food waste recycling program that’s set to take effect in January.

The effort is designed to keep landfills in the most populous U.S. state clear of food waste that damages the atmosphere as it decays. When food scraps and other organic materials break down they emit methane, a greenhouse gas more potent and damaging in the short-term than carbon emissions from fossil fuels.

Junior Specialist - Taha Lab

This position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable, related to their research area of expertise. When possible (and finding permitting), Junior Specialists may participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.

Junior Specialist - Harris Lab

The position of Junior Specialist provides technical or specialized expertise in the planning and execution of research projects in a Biosafety Level II Laboratory. The Junior Specialist stays apprised of the research area and maintains technical competence in the designated area(s) of specialization. The role of this position is to provide specialized expertise in microbial food safety research projects of the laboratory of the Principal Investigator Dr. Linda J. Harris. The Junior Specialist is actively and significantly engaged in research involving isolation and characterization of foodborne pathogens (Salmonella, shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and Listeria monocytogenes) from environmental and food samples as part of a project that seeks to understand the prevalence and distribution of foodborne pathogens in the produce growing environment and in harvested products. The Junior Specialist is responsible for setting up and executing experiments and conducting quality control and data management procedures. The Junior Specialist will have the opportunity to have creative input into the design of and selection of experiments to meet the study objectives. They will also assist with routine day-to-day lab duties including lab safety duties, supplies acquisition, and will lead undergraduate assistants.
